Corneal Surgery & Transplants

Vision Surgery

Corneal Abrasion Treatments

The ophthalmologists of Vision Surgery Consultants specialize in the management of cornea conditions including corneal abrasion. The cornea is the clear, dome-shaped tissue of the iris, or the colored part of the eye. Certain conditions can lead to visual loss that is only treatable with a corneal transplantation. For conditions that cause scarring or opacification of multiple layers of the cornea, a full-thickness transplant or Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) is often used. This is where the entire central cornea is removed and replaced with a cornea from a healthy donor. The donor is secured to the recipient cornea with multiple sutures.

If you have a corneal abrasion or may need cornea surgery, please make an appointment with the eye surgeons of Vision Surgery Consultants for a thorough evaluation.

Conditions We Treat at Vision Surgery Consultants

Corneal surgery may be recommended for conditions including keratoconus (progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea), Fuchs’ dystrophy and corneal swelling, corneal scarring from injury or infection, and complications from previous eye surgery. During a comprehensive evaluation, our surgeons determine whether corneal treatment is right for you and which approach offers the best outcome.

Corneal Transplant Options

When the cornea is too damaged to repair, a corneal transplant replaces the affected tissue with healthy donor tissue. Modern techniques allow our surgeons to replace only the damaged layers of the cornea when appropriate, which can mean faster healing and better results than traditional full-thickness transplants. Your ophthalmologist will recommend the technique best suited to your condition and discuss what to expect before, during, and after the procedure.
